The story of the Cameroonian credit co-operative is very similar to Rabobank's
own development as a co-operative. It started small, with the rural population
saving with their local co-operative and able to borrow to develop their
economie activities. The organization started in 1963 and by 1968 they had 34
self-supporting credit and savings co-operatives. As they grew they developed
a centralized body, CamCCUL (Cameroon Co-operative Credit Union League,
Ltd.), to assist the member credit unions with training, treasury and audits.
In the 1990s, CamCCUL set up its own bank, Union Bank of Cameroon (UBC), to
support their member organizations with normal banking business. As they
had little experience in banking, Rabobank Foundation sourced the technical
expertise necessary from within the Rabobank Group to offer UBC advice and
technical assistance.
