As the first example of the type of project that this fund would seek to support, Iwona Lechocka of APFT in Utrecht is presently undertaking, at her own expense, a trek in Peru along the Inca Trail to raise funds for AFS. AFS is an international, registered chanty with over 100,000 volunteers worldwide lts roots stem from work during the two World Wars, where it mobilized and organized field service volunteer ambulance drivers. This NGO currently works across 54 countries, focusing on developmental programs for young people. AFS has been awarded a United Nations citation for its work with young people, focusing on disabled, orphaned and Street children Many programs it undertakes address the problems of secondary education (teaching as well as bricks-and-mortar projects). As well as rehabilitation projects for street children, which are the most vulnerable members of society to exploitation, poverty and crime, and risks such as solvent-based narcotics and AIDS. By, for example, sponsoring Iwona's trek in Peru, money will be raised to fund volunteers going to work in orphanages in Lima and to support schools in buying simple classroom materials such as paper and pencils, which are regularly lacking. Your kind contribution to this "Emerging Markets Chanty Fund" will enable us to support AFS, other such organizations and specific charitable initiatives for emerging markets, as might be proposed by RI colleagues in the future for emerging markets related initiatives. Rik van Slingelandt, Hans Megens and Frans van Bijsterveld have accepted responsibility for supervising the use of the proceeds of this fund in accordance to the mentioned objectives. We look forward to hearing from you in the near future that you will support APFT going out in a social conscious style in a collaborative effort with the rest of RI. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information about the initiative. In any event we will keep you regularly updated on this initiative. Thank you for taking the time to consider the above proposal as well as the good professional interaction and exchanges we have had over the past decade. All former- APFTers, including the ones who left Rabobank and are still in touch, are very appreciative of that and have asked us to convey that to you through this memo. Your donations can be paid into account 3947.80.450 with Rabobank Utrecht, reference "Emerging Markets Charity Fund".
