in briet new faces did you know Recycling sponsorship Donating personal computers 2 What'sNewS Issue 2 February 1999 I Our own chairman, Herman Wijffels, recently announced rhat Rabobank will be continuing its sponsorship of the professional cycling team until 2003, with an option of extending a further two years. At the presentation of this year's new cycling teams, Wijffels expressed Rabobank's satisfaction at the results so far of the Rabobank cycling plan. 'We are seeing the fruits of our efforts across the entire spectrum, from recreational cycling to the professional team.' Wijffels, who will be leaving the bank in March, also emphasized that the decision to renew the sponsorship contract was also supported by his successor Hans Smits, among others. 'In our organization decisions like these are never taken by just one person, they require the unanimous backing of the board,' Smits explained. And as with previous years, expectations are running high for the Rabobank cycling team, who are set to start the new season with no fewer than seven racers from the world's top 50. In today's fast-moving global business world, a personal computer (PC) has a shelf life of around three years before it's replaced with a newer, faster model. Through an initiative taken by our own Rabobank Foundation, these near-new, yet already 'old' computers are put to - typieally Rabobank - sustainable use. The snow- balling project involves the network donating their used PCs to worthy causes in developing countries. So far a total of over 1500 computers have been donated, of those 1090 came from local Dutch banks - some 50 from Rabobank Eindhoven alone, Kertyan students' ftrst lesson in word processing on recycled Rabobank computers 310 from combined Rabobank International (Rl) offices and 120 from Rabobank Nederland Securities Services. Within the Netherlands all donated PCs are being used in primary schools. And some examples further afield: under the auspices of the Rabobank Foundation who selects the projects and takes responsi- bility for logistics, a secondary school in Kenya now has several computers for educational purposes, as do schools stretching as far and f wide as Surinam and Bolivia. And a wonten's micro-credit group from Columbian slums now have access to PCs to run their administration. For more on the project, or how to donate your near-new com puter, contact either your local systems administrator, the Raboweh or Michaël de Groot at Rabobank Foundation (m.a.n.groot@rn.rabobank.nl). Laurens Masereeuw (below) showed Rabobank International (Rl) a new face early in February when he stepped in to the marketing department as senior marketing manager. Masereeuw completed his studies in economie geography at the University of Utrecht. After pursuing further studies in marketing he began his career in market research, designing several marketing information systems along the way. With the NMB Postbank Group (later, ING) he served as project manager for several customer-focused projects. Conseguently he was asked to help found a daughter company of ING and insurance company Nationale Nederlanden called MKB Punt, which grew from two employees to 70 in three years. As marketing manager, he developed marketing and communication tools and strategies; expertise which he now brings to Rl. He is eager to face the challenge of'finding the right kind of marketing mix for Rl worldwide. This means standardizing PR and marketing tools while still leaving room for local requirements'. TheAsian health care team in Singapore is fortunate to have the expertise of two new members. Anne Hockett (below left) joined us as senior manager in September of 1998. Prior to that she was the managing director and founder ofAsia Health Ventures, a regional health care venture capitaI company. Hockett's background in health care is distinctive because of its variety in both the public and private sectors. Christine Pillsbury (left) came to Rabobank health care in November of 1998 from Warburg Dillon Read where she worked as a senior investment analyst in Singapore equity research. Previously, she was named a chartered financial analyst for her launch of the GBP 20 million closed end Asia health care fund.
