he board of a member bank is composed of
people who live and work in the local community
and, of course, of the bank's director. With the exception of the director, none of
the board members are employees of the bank, so it is a pretty independent body
elected by the members of our local bank. We can really make a difference in the
community. We know what local people's concerns are because we are local people.
It means policy and decision-making here are closer to the community served.'
lthough we formulate issues
relevant to local member banks at
our regional meetings, you won't find us forming
lobbies with other regions to drive through policy or
strategy that is only advantageous for our particular
area. It is not about power per se. Basically, we're
trying to put the customer first and so our actions
are geared to that. We have to anticipate the ntarket
and what the competition will do, so that's the most
important aim of this process - getting everyone
involved in creating and pursuing strategy.'
