WHAT'S NewS Issue 11 November 1996
The Olympic system was
brought on line for Singapore
with assistance from the
dedicated IPB IT team in
I.uxembourg last summer. The
basic system went live on July
1 and now the combined teams
are working on fine tunings.
Says Luxembourg's Jesse
Brewster: 'Singapore needed
this system and they needed it
fast to meet basic clients needs.
It was the first time ever that
we actually tailored a system to
specific requirements by sitting
down together and working
out exactly what was needed.
This has proved successful. But
our people in Singapore, and
Hong Kong, who have remote
access, now feel the need to
enhance the present system.'
Jennifer Sim, head of IPB
operations in Singapore agrees.
'Our clients are pretty happy
with the basic services this
system provides, but they are
increasingly requesting more
complex reporting, such as FX
margins. We are now working
closely with the team in
Luxembourg to generate these
enhancements and to work out
improved management
reporting. We'11 keep you up to
date on progress.'

(what's in a word}
We use them every day, but
what is the exact disctinction
between share,security,stock
and equity? Here's the answer.
Equity this is a complicated
one. Equity actually has four
different meanings. Iit is a
beneficial interest in an asset.
Home ownership is a good
example here. Ifyou own a
house valued at NLG 100,000
and you have a mortgage of
NLG 50,000, then you have an
equity of NLG 50,000 in the
house.
Equity 2 the netassetsofa
company after all creditors
have been paid.
Equity 3 the amount of money
which remains after an asset
has been sold and all related
loans have been repaid.
Equity 4 the ordinary share
capital of a company.
Security A financial asset,
including shares, stocks, bonds,
etc. But also an asset which is
used as collateral for a loan -
often known as collateral rather
than security in banking.
Share one of- usually a limited
number of- titles to ownership
of a company. A share gives the
owner the legal right to part of
the company's profits and
voting rights.There are
numerous types of shares.The
most common form is the
ordinary share which has no
guaranteed dividend (ie.share
of profit) but carries voting
rights,and preference shares,
whose holders are paid
dividends before the ordinary
shareholder.
Stock In the UK, a fixed-interest
security issued by (local)
government or corporates.
These usually have a
redemption date and can be
bought and sold on the stock
exchange. In the US, stock
means an ordinary share.
