Say 'Maiden Britain' out loud and you'll get part of the message. The other part, London Branch's Heather Armstrong (left) tells us, is that a three-woman team will be motorbike racing for cancer research against an experienced, all-male field of 39 other teams. Again, 'race' needs a bit of clarification. We're talking a gruelling six- hour endurance test here that Heather and her two co-bikers, Claire Raikes of BFP and Sarah Keil of Daytona Motorcycles, describe as starting out as a 'giggle'. 'This is the first time any of us have ever done anything on this scale for charity,' Heather says. 'It's also the first time any of us have raced a motorbike. So to say the project is 'interesting' would be an understatement of mammoth proportions.' What started as a giggle has taken on proportions of its own. The women have managed to drum up considerable corporate sponsorship, not least from their employers. 'We're delighted that the bank has made a donation to our fund.' But they want to raise as much money as they can for cancer research, so Maiden Britain is still looking for sponsors - their debut on September 8 is only the start. Come on, network, how about it? Wegototheinvisibleworldof international Communications for this month'sjargonese - see also pages 4 and 5. Remote access you are in Santiago de Chile and you need information or applications in your regional computer centre's system, which in this case is New York. A remote access facility allows you to get what you need. There are two other regional centres - Singapore and Utrecht. Roll out means implementation, ie. that an office can use all available facilities, such as e-mail,file transfer and remote access. Full roll out is when all offices are connected. Live when installation and implementation is completed and the link works, then the office has gone 'live'. Encryption the encoding of data so that it is secure and cannot be read by anyone without the right authorization. Hacker someone who accesses data illegally. Fire wall part of the securitization process to prevent illegal access. Gate checks same as fire wall. Virtual circuit our own private line for Communications. It is part of a huge cable and is rented only by us. Band width the size of the virtual circuit we rent. This can differ according to the volume of Communications needs. For example, New York will have a greater band width than Wagga Wagga in Australia. Functionalities applications that can be installed on the network, eg. e-mail, file transfer, remote access, and video conferencing (slated for next year).
