(what's in a word)
This month we look at terms,
some odd,others more usual,
you may come across in the
lending business.
Back to back: a credit opened
by a financial institution on the
strength of another credit and
used in foreign trade.The
foreign importer provides rel
evant documents to the finance
house and a credit is then
opened on the strength of this
in favour of the exporter.These
can then be used to back an
other credit for the exporter -
the first backs the second credit.
Back to bank loan: loan in one
currency is set against loan in
another currency.Can be used
to avoid exchange risks and
controls.
Balloon: loan whose final re-
payment is far greater than the
other installments.
Clubdeal: when agroupof
banks provide joint finance on
the same terms and conditions
rather than the more usual
system of designating lead or
co-lead managers.
Evergreen: a revolving credit
with no fixed maturity date
which a bank can convert into
a term loan once a year.
Naked warrant: a warrant
offered on its own rather than
being attached to an original
bond.
Sushi: Eurocurrency bond is-
sued by Japanese borrowers
and targeted at Japanese
investors.
Zoo: many debt instruments
carry animal acronyms.eg.
CATS (certificate of accrual on
treasury securities),TIGER
(treasury investors growth
receipt). Zoo is the collective
name for these instruments.
