There were extensive discussions about the positioning of the foreign offices in their own markets and the relationship with the organization and local banks. The financial objectives were also established. An important element was a discussion with representatives from the local banks in the Netherlands. One topic was the area of conflicting interests between the profiling of the foreign offices on the so-called niche markets and the profiling of the iocal banks in the Netherlands. The local banks traditionally concentrate on providing services for their fiUUU Issue 10/January, 1992 band members, regardless of the activity they perform and the size of the company. There was also scope for social contacts during the conference. On the site of the world horticultural exhibition, Floriade, due to open in April, the general managers met represen tatives of the subsidiaries of Rabobank Nederland, such as The treasury managers of the foreign offices were in Utrecht for the Treasury Management Meet- Rabobank is the main sponsor of the Floriade, the greatest flower show on earth, which will be held in the Netherlands from 10 April to 11 October. The general managers were one of the first groups to take a look at the 70-hectare site one year before the official opening. The Floriade is an international horticultural exhibition which takes place in the Netherlands once every ten years. lts size and planning are unique. There is exceptionally great interest in the event in both the Dutch and international horticultural world, as well as among the public at iarge. The Floriade will be the meeting point for the international hor ticultural industry from which some 150,000 visitors are expected. The exhibition will be the main public attraction De Lage Landen, Nedship Bank, Interpolis and Schretlen. One of the themes at the general managers' conference was international trade finance. Treasurers are responsible worldwide for raising the money required for financing the loan portfolio, as well as being in charge of liquidity man agement. In addition, some dealing rooms have the extra task of acquiring short-term but mainly medium-term funds on behalf of the whole organ ization. During the meeting the Treasury Managers visited Rabobank Nederland's branch in the port of Rotterdam. On the way there they stopped briefly to take a photograph in front of the world-famous windmills in Kinderdijk. in the Netherlands in 1992. The organizers expect about 2.5 million people. Rabobank, as the main sponsor, will be linked with the Floriade in various ways. At the start of 1991 the Central Banking Sector of Rabobank Nederland investi- gated the possibilities for im- proving efficiency. Shortly after this project was completed the CBS began formulating the Strategie Policy Plan for 1990- 1995. The plan plots the course to be followed by the International Division in order to achieve a stronger representation in Europe, strengthen the Trade Finance activities and further exploit the facilities of the na- tional and international networks. In Rabobank Nederland it has been decided that a distinction will be made between activities performed for the organization and Rabobank Nederland's own banking operations. All this was set up in the light of the targets and financial limits within which the organization wishes to op- erate. The guidelines here are maintaining a top banking position at triple A level and operating within the scope for investment available to the or ganization. It has also been de cided to set up a new division, Corporate Finance, which will concentrate on capital market products for companies. There will be 215 fewer per manent jobs at Rabobank Ne derland in the coming five years. The division concerned is Office Supplies and Mailing. This re- duction in staff is mainly caused by technological developments, as a result of which electronic communication will replace in- formation in printed form. The Office Supplies and Mailing Division, which has departments in various branches of Rabo bank Nederland, has again re- viewed its task and operation. Technological developments are increasingly leading to com munication by electronic means. As a result, less and less infor- mation is distributed in printed form to local Rabobanks using mail vans. Competitive offers from external service firms are another development. These en- able some activities to be car- ried out less expensively by spe- cialized companies. At present, the Division still has 492 em ployees.
